John Holm’s career in landscape design started at the New York Botanical Garden School of Horticulture. His first job was working for Martha Stewart as Head Gardener on her estate in Bedford, New York. That was followed by a seven year Head Gardener position on AP Farm in North Salem, New York. In 2016 he founded John Holm Landscape Design and has been working on a variety of independent projects since.
John is a plantsman first and works with his clients to design gardens from the ground up. He takes into consideration existing conditions and local vernacular. He strives to take advantage of a property’s innate qualities, but is not afraid to edit and add for dramatic effect.
In addition to his education and work experience, John cites travel as a source of inspiration. Long stays in France informed his sense of the romantic. Visits to Japan honed his desire for order and contrast. On his many travels he seeks out gardens and researches plants, looking for elements he can incorporate into the gardens he creates.
